Relative to German American Heritage Day and Month.


LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST


HR 8, as introduced, Voepel.

WHEREAS, Early German American immigrants settled in the Americas during the early years of Jamestown in Virginia; and
WHEREAS, On October 6, 1683, the first American German town was founded in Pennsylvania and named Germantown; and
WHEREAS, Like many immigrant groups in the United States, German Americans came to the United States to seek opportunities that they were deprived of back home. America promised opportunity for farm ownership, escape from religious persecution, and more economic mobility to help raise their families; and
WHEREAS, German Americans contributed to the development of the United States in many ways, including in science with Neil Armstrong being the first person to set foot on the moon; in entertainment with Walt Disney bringing magic into people’s lives through Disney World, Disneyland, and many treasured films that keep smiles on every child’s face; and in industry with William Edward Boeing being an aviation pioneer of The Boeing Company; and
WHEREAS, Many people of German American descent have contributed in different areas of American life from the sciences to literature, from the economy to entrepreneurship, and from technological advancement to the design of the United States Capitol dome by August G. Schoenborn; and
WHEREAS, German Americans have also played a major role in California politics as governors, legislative leaders, city mayors, and other public officials who have worked tirelessly to build California into the state that it is today; and
WHEREAS, German Americans were significantly involved in the development of infrastructure and technology throughout the United States, especially in California. This includes notable German Americans such as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs who developed revolutionary technologies that move commerce, build human connections across the globe, and built independence across continents; and
WHEREAS, Many German American authors like John Steinbeck and Dr. Seuss, celebrities and humorists like Jimmy Kimmel and David Letterman, and composers like Hans Zimmer who changed the film industry, have contributed greatly to the United States in art, entertainment, and literature; and
WHEREAS, Today, over 42.8 million Americans across the United States and over 6 million in the State of California claim German heritage, and they continue to contribute to American and Californian politics, economy, and culture; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That in honor of the multitude of contributions that German Americans have made to make this a better country and state for all people, the Assembly declares the month of October 2019 as German American Heritage Month and October 6, 2019, as German American Heritage Day in California, and the Assembly calls upon the people of the state to observe the month of October with appropriate ceremonies, programs, and activities; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
