Relative to the George Jumper sawmill.

SCR 78, as introduced, Aanestad. George Jumper sawmill.
This measure would request the Department of Transportation to erect informational signs on a specified portion of State Highway Route 3, in the County of Trinity, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, directing motorists to the George Jumper sawmill.

WHEREAS, In the 19th century, George Jumper established a steam-powered sawmill above the confluence of Little Brown’s Creek and China Gulch in the County of Trinity; and
WHEREAS, An 80-foot-long building housed the sawmill; and
WHEREAS, Oxen teams of 10 or more were used to pull long, four-wheel carts loaded with logs for the mill; and
WHEREAS, Timber close in was “skidded” directly to the mill by oxen; and
WHEREAS, Circular saws were used to cut the lumber, but much of the work in the mill was hard, physical labor; and
WHEREAS, The mill lasted until the timber in the immediate area was logged; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly thereof concurring, That the Legislature recognizes the importance to the people of California of the historic sawmill established by George Jumper and requests that the Department of Transportation erect informational signs, consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system and upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover the cost, on the northbound portion of State Highway Route 3 at milepost 35.35, in the County of Trinity, directing motorists to the George Jumper sawmill monument; and be it further
Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the Department of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
