ACR 134, Bates. Wildland Fire Prevention Month.
This measure would proclaim the month of June to be Wildland Fire Prevention Month.

WHEREAS, California’s history of wildland fires, particularly in critical drought years, dramatically illustrates the potential for large conflagrations during the late summer and early fall; and
WHEREAS, Every year, wildland fires destroy the properties, and more importantly, the lives, of many Californians, resulting in enormous personal and financial losses; and
WHEREAS, The fires in the East Bay hills, and more recently in west Orange County, left a legacy of scarred lives and landscapes and highlighted the vulnerability of many communities located near the urban and wildland interface; and
WHEREAS, The recent wildland fires have required the full-scale mobilization of fire professionals and related assistance to combat these infernos, depleting local firefighting and emergency response resources throughout the state; and
WHEREAS, To help prevent future wildland fires, California should maximize the available resources by encouraging cooperation between state and local public safety services and enhancing the public’s awareness of appropriate wildland fire prevention practices; and
WHEREAS, Californians are largely unfamiliar with the behavior and ecology of fire and need to become more educated and proactive in their efforts to prevent wildland fires; and
WHEREAS, Local public safety agencies in general, and fire agencies in particular, have the expertise and dedication to educate Californians on wildland fire prevention practices; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That, to focus statewide public attention on the importance of appropriate wildland fire prevention practices, the Legislature hereby proclaims the month of June to be Wildland Fire Prevention Month; and be it further
Resolved, That the Legislature urges locally elected bodies to support local fire agencies in implementing programs that educate the public on wildland fire prevention; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the Director of Forestry and Fire Protection and to the author for appropriate distribution.
