An act to add Section 44255 to the Education Code, relating to teacher credentialing.

AB 2235, as introduced, Medina. Teacher credentialing: supplementary authorization: ethnic studies.
Existing law requires the Commission on Teacher Credentialing to, among other duties, establish standards for the issuance and renewal of credentials, certificates, and permits. Existing law authorizes the commission to grant an added or supplementary authorization to a credentialholder who has met the requirements and standards of the commission for the added or supplementary authorization.
This bill would require the commission to develop an added or supplementary authorization in ethnic studies. The bill would require the commission to grant the added or supplementary authorization in ethnic studies to a credentialholder who has met the requirements and standards of the commission for the added or supplementary authorization in ethnic studies, as provided.

The people of the State of California do enact as follows:


SECTION 1.

 Section 44255 is added to the Education Code, to read:

44255.
 (a) As used in this section, “authorization” means an added or supplementary authorization in ethnic studies developed by the commission pursuant to subdivision (b).
(b) The commission shall develop an added or supplementary authorization in ethnic studies.
(c) The commission shall grant the authorization to a credentialholder who has met the requirements and standards of the commission for the authorization.
(d) Ethnic studies coursework that meets the requirements of the authorization and has been completed by a credentialholder before the authorization is developed by the commission shall qualify toward the granting of the authorization to the credentialholder.
