Relative to the 100th anniversary of the Save the Redwoods League.

WHEREAS, The mission of Save the Redwoods League is to protect and restore redwood forests, and to connect people with the peace and beauty of redwood forests so these wonders of the natural world flourish; and
WHEREAS, Since the founding of Save the Redwoods League in 1918, its focus has been the protection of the iconic coast redwood and giant sequoia forests; and
WHEREAS, Redwood forests are home to the tallest, largest trees on earth that grow to be more than 3,500 years old; and
WHEREAS, The redwoods are California’s official state tree and their old growth forests serve as the most effective, forest-based carbon sink in the world, storing three times or more carbon per acre than any other forest ecosystem; and
WHEREAS, After the 1849 California Gold Rush, demand for lumber devastated ancient redwood forests from California to Oregon. Today, only 5 percent of the original, coastal redwood range remains, and the giant sequoia stand exists only in small, scattered groves along California’s Sierra Nevada; and
WHEREAS, The Save the Redwoods League has protected over 214,000 acres of redwood forests and helped establish 66 redwood parks and reserves throughout the trees’ natural range; and
WHEREAS, The Save the Redwoods League has worked to restore redwood forests through innovation, science, and technology that has led to improved stewardship and accelerated forest regeneration; and
WHEREAS, The Save the Redwoods League’s work is based on conservation biology, research, and the improvement of greater understanding and appreciation of redwoods; and
WHEREAS, The redwood forests are true wonders of the world, inspiring more than 31 million visitors each year in California’s redwood parks; and
WHEREAS, For 100 years, the Save the Redwoods League has touched the lives of hundreds of millions of people by connecting them to the power and beauty of nature, inspiring them with the patient resilience of ancient redwood forests, and offering hope that the spectacular grandeur of California’s redwood forests can be maintained and enjoyed for future generations; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the Assembly recognizes September 15 to October 15, inclusive, of 2018 as the 100th anniversary of the Save the Redwoods League, and urges the people of California to share in this event by celebrating California’s redwoods and supporting their conservation and restoration into the future; and be it further
Resolved, That the Assembly recognizes the Save the Redwoods League for 100 years of leadership in protecting and restoring California’s redwood forests, saving hundreds of thousands of acres of precious, ancient groves, creating parks that inspire millions of visitors from around the world, and advancing research that has greatly enhanced our understanding of this treasured forest resource; and be it further
Resolved, That the Assembly hereby declares 2018 as the Year of the Redwoods; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
