Relative to California Pedestrian Safety Month

WHEREAS, In 2015, 813 pedestrians were killed on California roadways; and
WHEREAS, Between 2006 and 2015, 6,939 people died in pedestrian-related traffic incidents in California; and
WHEREAS, Pedestrian fatalities account for nearly 25 percent of all roadway deaths in California; and
WHEREAS, No state has more pedestrian deaths on its roadways than California; and
WHEREAS, Californians are encouraged to practice safe pedestrian and driving behaviors in order to reduce pedestrian-related injuries and fatalities; and
WHEREAS, Pedestrians and motorists should continue to be reminded about their role in ensuring the safety of all who use California’s roadways; and
WHEREAS, Californians are encouraged to support activities associated with pedestrian safety; and
WHEREAS, Walking provides positive mental and physical health benefits to the pedestrian, increases personal mobility options, potentially lessens air pollution and vehicular congestion, and increases community livability; and
WHEREAS, The Transportation Agency, Office of Traffic Safety, Department of the California Highway Patrol, Department of Transportation, and Department of Motor Vehicles are joined in the commitment to educate the public on pedestrian safety issues and bring an eventual end to pedestrian deaths and injuries; and
WHEREAS, California recognizes the need to achieve greater mobility, safety, and sustainability in its travel and transportation objectives; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, That the Senate recognizes the month of September 2016, and every September thereafter, as California Pedestrian Safety Month. The people of California and its visitors are encouraged to help reduce pedestrian-related injuries and the tragic loss of lives by practicing safe walking and driving behaviors during California Pedestrian Safety Month and every month throughout the year; and be it further
Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
