CHAPTER 203

Relative to the 106th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage in California.

[ Filed with Secretary of State  September 25, 2017. ]

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST

ACR 118, Waldron. Women’s suffrage in California: anniversary.
This measure would proclaim October 10, 2017, as the 106th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage in California.
Fiscal Committee: NO

WHEREAS, While American women generally gained the right to vote in 1920, the women of California had already won the right to vote in 1911, nearly a decade earlier; and
WHEREAS, On October 10, 1911, a majority of California men voted for political equality and passed Proposition 4, a women’s suffrage amendment to the California Constitution placed on the ballot by the Legislature; and
WHEREAS, Before that date, although women had been working and organizing since 1848 to win the franchise, only five western states had thus far approved the radical and controversial idea; and
WHEREAS, California became the sixth state in the nation to approve political equality, approving women’s suffrage in California nine years before the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified, which guaranteed women throughout the country the right to vote; and
WHEREAS, The successful 1911 campaign for women’s suffrage drew help from suffragists all over America, a formidable effort by all who learned from an earlier unsuccessful campaign in 1896; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby recognizes October 10, 2017, as the 106th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage in California and encourages all Californians to join in this observance; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare and transmit copies of this resolution to the Governor and to the author for distribution.
