This measure would urge the Office of the State Fire Marshal to adopt rules for the use of mass timber products for residential and commercial building construction.

WHEREAS, California has a history and tradition of wisely using the state’s forest resources; and
WHEREAS, Much of California’s rural economy relies upon sound forest management practices for living wage jobs and a viable economy; and
WHEREAS, California’s urban communities rely on the goods and resources provided by the communities of rural California; and
WHEREAS, Mass timber is a tested and proven building product that has the opportunity to combine California’s rural and urban traditions of leading wood products production; and
WHEREAS, The International Code Council recently adopted code updates that will provide for the construction of tall buildings using mass timber products, and
WHEREAS, California is in the position to facilitate the use of mass timber in tall buildings; and
WHEREAS, The increased construction of mass timber buildings in California can result in investment in California-based mass timber manufacturing facilities, increasing demand for use of California wood products; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby urges the Office of the State Fire Marshal to adopt rules for the use of mass timber products for residential and commercial building construction that consider applicable national and international standards, including the 14 tall mass timber code change proposals that were adopted by the International Code Council for the 2021 International Building Code; and be it further
