Relative to Ukrainian Independence Day


LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST


SR 57, Nielsen.

WHEREAS, The greatness of the United States is in large part attributable to this country having been able, through the democratic process, to achieve a harmonious national unity of its people, even though they stem from the most diverse racial, religious, and ethnic backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, The Ukrainian Declaration of Independence took place on August 24, 1991; and
WHEREAS, On August 24, 2017, the Ukrainian American community will celebrate the 26th anniversary of Ukrainian Independence, and on this occasion, it is appropriate to recognize California’s Ukrainian American citizens and thank them for their countless contributions to our nation’s cultural, economic, and political heritage; and
WHEREAS, Ukraine has proven its commitment to democratic ideals which were embodied in the restoration of its independence in 1991 and the values and responsibilities associated with those ideals; and
WHEREAS, For centuries, the people of Ukraine have yearned and struggled to achieve freedom and independence while preserving their religion, culture, language, and self-identity; and
WHEREAS, Ukrainian self-determination was evident in the brave Ukrainian immigrants who settled on the shore of the United States and contributed greatly to America by giving back to their adopted homeland, while never forgetting their rich history, culture, and heritage; and
WHEREAS, The perseverance and endurance of the Ukrainian people in standing against hatred, tyranny, and aggression, and their commitment to freedom, liberty, and independence, are commendable; and
WHEREAS, California is proud to be home to people of Ukrainian descent and benefits from the rich cultural heritage and family values that are passed along to future generations through the many Ukrainian musical, social, fraternal, educational, and religious organizations; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, That the Senate hereby recognizes August 24, 2017, as Ukrainian Independence Day and calls upon the people of the state to observe the month of August 2017 with appropriate ceremonies, programs, and activities; and be it further
Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
