Danielle van Dam Memorial Overpass.
This measure would designate the overpass on State Highway Route 8 at 2nd Street in El Cajon the “Danielle van Dam Memorial Overpass.” The measure would request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate plaques and markers showing the special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect appropriate plaques and markers.

WHEREAS, On September 22, 1994, in Plano, Texas, Danielle Nicole van Dam was born weighing 10 pounds and 15 ounces and ready to face the world; and
WHEREAS, Danielle had an older brother, Derek, and a younger brother, Dylan; and
WHEREAS, Danielle’s favorite colors were pink and purple and she enjoyed writing in her journals, ballet, gymnastics, Girl Scouts, and playing with her brothers and with friends; and
WHEREAS, Danielle was taught to respect others the way that she would want to be respected; and
WHEREAS, Danielle was a very special person who truly cared about the feelings of others; and
WHEREAS, When she was seven, Danielle’s family was planning a trip to Italy which was to take place on February 9, 2002; and
WHEREAS, On February 2, 2002, Danielle was abducted from her bedroom; and
WHEREAS, A search center was put together by the Laura Recovery Center and over 2,000 people volunteered to search for Danielle; and
WHEREAS, The picture used on Danielle’s missing child posters was her passport photograph, taken on February 1, 2002, in anticipation of the trip to Italy; and
WHEREAS, On February 27, 2002, Danielle’s body was found on Dehesa Road in El Cajon, near Interstate Highway Route 8; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the overpass on State Highway Route 8 at 2nd Street in El Cajon be designated the “Danielle van Dam Memorial Overpass” in honor of Danielle van Dam; and be it further
Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of appropriate plaques and markers, consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system, showing this special designation, and upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover that cost, to erect those plaques and markers; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the Department of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
