ACR 145, Achadjian. Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial: highway signs.
This measure would request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate directional signs, consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system, on State Highway Route 101 at its intersection with westbound State Highway Route 41 in the City of Atascadero, to the Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering the cost, to erect those signs.

WHEREAS, The Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial, located at 8038 Portola Road in the City of Atascadero, was dedicated on November 8, 2008; and
WHEREAS, The memorial consists of three elements, which are the Pathway to Freedom, the Faces of Freedom sculpture, and the Heroes Wall; and
WHEREAS, The memorial is the result of the efforts of the Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation, created in April 2006, with a goal of building a world class veterans memorial on the California central coast; and
WHEREAS, The foundation is comprised of two groups of veterans and community members, including retired, active duty, and reserve servicemembers, military family members, local and national corporate sponsors, other members of the community, and sculptor Mark Greenway; and
WHEREAS, The memorial is intended to honor the nation’s servicemembers by serving as a symbol of the public’s gratitude to those who, through their service and sacrifice, put their country first, and to teach youth about the nation’s core values; and
WHEREAS, It is appropriate for the Department of Transportation to post directional signs to the memorial from State Highway Route 101, commonly known as U.S. 101; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of appropriate directional signs, consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system, on State Highway Route 101 at its intersection with westbound State Highway Route 41 (Morro Road exit) in the City of Atascadero, to the Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
