Existing law requires a public school to conduct daily patriotic exercises. Existing law provides that this requirement may be satisfied through reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America.
This bill would specify that instruction that promotes understanding the concepts of “pledge,” “allegiance,” “republic,” and “indivisible,” and understanding the importance of the pledge as an expression of patriotism, love of country, and pride in the United States of America satisfies the requirement that patriotic exercises be conducted. This bill would also require that, when pupils in a public school are instructed with regard to the words of the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America as part of these patriotic exercises, the school is to provide a combination of the giving of the pledge and the instruction described above, which shall be provided by school districts
during the time allotted for the patriotic exercise.
