Relative to secondhand smoke.


LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST


HR 56, as introduced, Maze.

WHEREAS, Public health officials have concluded that exposure to secondhand smoke is harmful to individuals and may have harmful health effects, especially on children; and
WHEREAS, It is of vital importance to the health of children that families be educated about the health risks of exposing children to secondhand smoke; and
WHEREAS, Increasing the awareness of families regarding the health risks to children from secondhand smoke in vehicles is a valuable tool for use in reducing this exposure; and
WHEREAS, The State Department of Health Services currently oversees a major media awareness program aimed at reducing smoking among individuals, and that program often refers to the health risks associated with secondhand smoke generally; and
WHEREAS, Including ads that focus on the health risks to children from exposure to secondhand smoke in vehicles as a component of this media awareness program could be very effective in reducing that exposure; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the Assembly strongly urges the State Department of Health Services to place a priority on including as a component of the department’s media awareness campaign regarding smoking, specific ads that address the health risks to children as a result of exposure to secondhand smoke in vehicles; and be it further
Resolved, That the department is requested to inform the Assembly of its plans to incorporate these ads into its media campaign; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
