WHEREAS, During the First and Second World Wars, when a family had a son or daughter in the service, they put a blue star in their front window to tell the community of that fact; and
WHEREAS, The Blue Star Flag is an official banner authorized by the Department of Defense for display by families who have members serving in the Armed Forces during any period of war or hostilities; and
WHEREAS, The blue star represents sacrifice to the cause of liberty and freedom; and
WHEREAS, In 1960, Congress chartered the Blue Star Mothers of America as a Veterans Service Organization; and
WHEREAS, The Blue Star Flag program for those who have family members in the Armed Forces has been revived by certain cities; and
WHEREAS, Other cities are encouraged to participate in the Blue Star Flag program; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the second week of March each year be recognized as Blue Star Families Week during any period of war or hostilities.
