This measure would proclaim the week of May 4 through May 10, 2003, to be California Senior Mobility Awareness Week.

WHEREAS, May is Older Americans Month; and
WHEREAS, Americans are living longer and healthier lives; and
WHEREAS, More that 4 million Californians are aged 65 years or older; and
WHEREAS, The senior population is projected to grow to nearly 9 million by 2025; and
WHEREAS, More than 2.5 million California seniors are licensed drivers; and
WHEREAS, That number is expected to grow to more than 6.5 million by 2025; and
WHEREAS, It is important that California seniors continue to maintain active, independent lifestyles as long as possible; and
WHEREAS, It provides a social and economic benefit to California for seniors to continue driving as long as they can do so safely; and
WHEREAS, Safe mobility, including driving and walking, as well as alternative forms of convenient, safe, and reliable transportation, are essential for a satisfactory quality of life for seniors; and
WHEREAS, It is essential that the public be made aware of these facts; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the week of May 4 through May 10, 2003, is proclaimed as California Senior Mobility Awareness Week; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
