An act to add Section 60205 to the Education Code, relating to instructional materials.

AB 1872, as introduced, Nakano. Instructional materials: labor history.
Existing law requires the State Board of Education to adopt basic instructional materials for use in kindergarten and each of grades 1 to 8, inclusive, in the subjects of language arts, mathematics, science, social science, bilingual or bicultural subjects. Existing law also authorizes the state board to adopt instructional materials for any other subject, discipline, or interdisciplinary areas for which the state board determines the adoption of instructional materials to be necessary or desirable.
This bill would require instructional materials adopted by the state board for social science, history, or civics to contain information on California’s labor history, as provided.

The people of the State of California do enact as follows:


SECTION 1.

 Section 60205 is added to the Education Code, to read:

60205.
 Instructional materials adopted by the state board pursuant to this chapter for social science, history, or civics shall contain information on California’s labor history and shall trace the advances and retreats of organized labor, from the creation of the American Federal of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations to current issues of a postindustrial, multinational economy, including the United Farm Workers in California.
