Relative to Filipino-American Friendship Day.

ACR 91, as amended, Salinas. Filipino-American Friendship Day.
This measure would recognize July 4, 2001, as Filipino-American Friendship Day.
Fiscal Committee: NO  

WHEREAS, Filipino-American Friendship Day commemorates the July 4, 1946, United States Grant of Independence to the nation of the Philippines; and
WHEREAS, Commemorating Filipino-American Friendship Day is an appropriate celebration of the friendship and solidarity that has developed between the Philippines and the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, Filipino-Americans have distinguished themselves as honest, hard-working, patriotic, and family oriented people in our communities; and
WHEREAS, Filipino-Americans have achieved an important place in American culture through their participation in the arts, commerce, academics, sports, politics, and religion; and
WHEREAS, Located in the heart of Southeast Asia, the nation of the Philippines, consisting of 7,017 islands and islets, was discovered by a Spanish conquistador named Ferdinand Magellan, who landed at the island named Homonhon in 1521 where he claimed this newly discovered territory and named it after King Philip II of Spain by calling it Felipinas; and
WHEREAS, The Philippines are divided into three major islands, the first called Luzon situated in the north, the second named Visayan located in the middle, and the third island called Mindanao on the southern end. The capital region is Manila where the seat of government resides and all major business, economic, social, and cultural activity is centered; and
WHEREAS, Filipinos are known throughout the world for their overwhelming and immeasurable hospitality, where a warm welcome can always be expected and all visitors feel at home and are greeted with a big smile saying “Mabuhay”; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby recognizes July 4, 2001, as Filipino-American Friendship Day, and calls upon the citizens of California to mark this day with appropriate expressions of honor due to Filipino-Americans.
