WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society has estimated that 189,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed and that approximately 30,200 men will die of the disease in 2002; and
WHEREAS, Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death in men; and
WHEREAS, The number of new cases of prostate cancer in California is estimated to be 20,500 in 2002; and
WHEREAS, African-Americans have the highest incidence of prostate cancer among men; and
WHEREAS, Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in almost all races and ethnic groups in California; and
WHEREAS, Two out of every five Californians will develop cancer at some point in their lives; and
WHEREAS, Very little is known about the causes of prostate cancer, although early diagnosis and treatment of the disease may help men live longer; and
WHEREAS, Greater awareness of the incidence of prostate cancer is necessary to find new treatments and a cure for this disease; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the month of September 2002 be recognized as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and that all Californians are encouraged to make themselves and their families aware of the risk of prostate cancer and preventative measures.
