Little League Baseball Week.
This measure would commend Little League Baseball on its 63rd anniversary and designate the week of June 9 to June 15, 2002, inclusive, as Little League Baseball Week.

NO WHEREAS, In 1939, Carl Stotz founded Little League Baseball in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, as a baseball program for boys; a donation of $35 was made to purchase uniforms for the first three teams; and
WHEREAS, Between 1941 and 1946, during World War II, Little League Baseball in Pennsylvania expanded to 12 leagues; and
WHEREAS, In 1947, the first Little League World Series was won by Maynard Little League of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, the Hammonton New Jersey Little League became the first league established outside the State of Pennsylvania, and Little League Baseball expanded to 15 leagues; and
WHEREAS, In 1951, a Little League was formed for the first time outside of the United States in the province of British Columbia, Canada; and Little League Baseball grew to 776 leagues; and
WHEREAS, In 1957, the Little League Baseball team from Monterrey, Mexico, became the first foreign team to win the Little League World Series, with Angel Macias pitching the first perfect game in a Little League World Series Championship, and Little League membership expanded to 4,408 leagues worldwide; and
WHEREAS, In 1959, President Eisenhower proclaimed that the week beginning the second Monday of June would be observed annually as National Little League Baseball Week, receiving the full support of Congress; also in 1959, Dr. Crieghton Hale, Director of Safety Research for Little League Baseball developed the modern protective helmet; and in that year Little League Baseball expanded to over 5,200 leagues; and
WHEREAS, On July 17, 1964, under a bill signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, Little League Baseball was granted a Charter of Federal Incorporation; the legislation, which had unanimous support in both the United States Senate and the House of Representatives, is the highest recognition that the federal government can accord and it provided for the incorporation of Little League Baseball in all 50 states and endowed the program with the protective integrity of the United States government; and in that year Little League Baseball included 6,000 leagues; and
WHEREAS, In 1974, Little League and Senior League Softball programs were created, and 29,700 girls participated in these programs; and in that year Little League Baseball comprised more than 6,800 leagues around the world; and
WHEREAS, In 1989, Little League Baseball celebrated its 50th, Anniversary; Poland received Certificates of Charter for the first four Little League programs to be established in an Eastern-Bloc country; and former Boston Red Sox star player Carl Yastrzemski became the first Little League Baseball graduate to be inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, In 1990, Little League Baseball launched its first full season of the Challenger Division, developed for mentally and physically disabled children; and Little League Baseball was enjoyed by children in 39 countries; and
WHEREAS, Today, Little League Baseball is the largest organized youth sports program in the world, totalling over 7,400 leagues with 200,000 teams serving over 3,000,000 boys and girls in 80 countries, including the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, and the Far East; and
WHEREAS, The enjoyment of Little League Baseball transcends all nationalities, languages, and geographic borders, bringing children and adults together in a friendly, wholesome family activity, with the program’s popularity reaching new heights every season; and
WHEREAS, Little League Baseball has become an important part of the childhood development of a large segment of our society and has evolved into a leadership-training program for both boys and girls around the world; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature commends Little League Baseball on its 63rd anniversary for its exemplary leadership in assisting youth in developing the qualities of citizenship, discipline, teamwork, physical, mental, and emotional well being; and be it further
Resolved, That the Legislature commends all boys and girls participating in Little League Baseball or Softball throughout California, along with their parents, managers, and coaches, for their commitment to developing the character, courage, and loyalty necessary for these boys and girls to become successful, productive citizens; and be it further
Resolved, That the Legislature designates the week of June 9, 2002, to June 15, 2002, inclusive, as Little League Baseball Week; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
