Relative to National Volunteer Week.

ACR 181, Harman. National Volunteer Week.
This measure would proclaim the week of April 21 through 27, 2002, as National Volunteer Week 2002 and would acknowledge the valuable gifts of service of the thousands of community volunteers throughout the state.

WHEREAS, The Points of Light Foundation is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization founded in May of 1990; and
WHEREAS, The mission of the foundation is “to engage more people more effectively in volunteer efforts to help solve serious social problems”; and
WHEREAS, The Board of Directors of the Points of Light Foundation consists of prominent and politically diverse national leaders from the business, education, and nonprofit communities, and includes former President George Bush, who serves as honorary chairman of the board; and
WHEREAS, The foundation sponsors National Volunteer Week, an annual celebration of volunteerism and community service; and
WHEREAS, National Volunteer Week began in 1974 when President Richard M. Nixon signed an executive order establishing the week as a time to annually recognize and honor volunteers for their outstanding contributions to local communities; and
WHEREAS, Every President since has signed a proclamation promoting National Volunteer Week; and
WHEREAS, April 21 to 27, 2002, will be the 29th annual National Volunteer Week; and
WHEREAS, The theme for Volunteer Week 2002, which is “Celebrate the American Spirit-VOLUNTEER!”, is particularly appropriate as we continue to witness the outpouring of contributions and compassion following the September 11, 2001, attack on our country; and
WHEREAS, The practice of regularly volunteering time to community services projects should be promoted throughout California, as it enriches the lives of both those who receive services and those who volunteer; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby proclaims its support for National Volunteer Week by proclaiming the week of April 21 through 27, 2002, as National Volunteer Week 2002, and extends its gratitude to the thousands of community volunteers throughout the state for their valuable gifts of service; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
