LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST


SCR 39, Monteith. Columbia State Historic Park.
This measure would recognize the historic value of Columbia State Historic Park and commend the citizens of the town of Columbia for their efforts in preserving the historic character and the park’s unique place in the history of the state.
WHEREAS, Gold was discovered near what later became the town of Columbia on March 27, 1850; and
WHEREAS, Columbia was known as the “Gem of the Southern Mines”; and
WHEREAS, Through the dedication of local citizens and state officials, Columbia was designated a State Historic Park by Governor Earl Warren on July 15, 1945; and
WHEREAS, Columbia was designated as the capital of California for the day on July 15, 1945; and
WHEREAS, Columbia State Historic Park contains the largest single collection of intact Gold Rush era structures in the State of California; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby recognizes the historic value of Columbia State Historic Park and commends the citizens of the town of Columbia for their efforts in preserving the historic character and the park’s unique place in the history of the state.
