Relative to County Government Month 2010.

ACR 121, Conway. County Government Month 2010.
This measure would recognize April 2010 as County Government Month.

WHEREAS, National County Government Month is celebrated each April by the nation’s counties to raise public awareness and understanding about the roles and responsibilities of county government in our communities; and
WHEREAS, The nation’s 3,068 counties provide a variety of essential public services to communities serving 300 million Americans; and
WHEREAS, The responsibilities of counties are diverse and complex, ranging from animal control to tax collection and foster care to public health inspections; and
WHEREAS, California’s 58 counties are committed to protecting and enhancing the health, welfare, and safety of their residents in an effective and efficient manner; and
WHEREAS, As partners with the state, counties deliver many health and human services to vulnerable children, families, and seniors; and
WHEREAS, Counties own and operate more than one-third of the state’s maintained road miles. Counties are responsible for ensuring the safety and mobility
of the traveling public, farm-to-market and multimodal needs, and the movement of people and goods necessary for a strong economy; and
WHEREAS, In unincorporated California, counties provide county residents with a variety of municipal services, including law enforcement, housing, libraries, and parks; and
WHEREAS, California counties administer the local justice system, from prosecution and defense to detention and probation; and
WHEREAS, County elected officials, managers, and employees work each day to improve the quality of life for all Californians by promoting healthy and sustainable communities and environments where residents can work, learn, and play; and
WHEREAS, From tiny Alpine County with only 1,200 residents to Los Angeles County with more than 10 million residents, California’s counties reflect the broad demographic, economic, and geographic diversity of our state; and
WHEREAS, Counties serve all 38 million Californians each and every day; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature declares April 2010 as County Government Month in the state and encourages all Californians to actively participate in their county government; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
