| To the Members of the California State Assembly: I am signing Assembly Bill 1194 because it will provide stronger privacy protections pursuant to the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), so that individuals searching for information related to contraception, pregnancy care, perinatal care, and abortion services will have their data protected. As access to abortions, contraception, and other essential health care services continues to be criminalized across the country, California will remain a leader in protecting women, their family and friends, and health care workers who seek or provide reproductive care. I appreciate the author's work on this policy to protect reproductive privacy; however, a broad interpretation of the bill could result in unintended consequences regarding the application of the existing exemptions in the CCPA. Moving forward, I encourage the author and stakeholders to collaborate on any necessary clean-up policy to ensure an appropriate balance between protections and necessary exemptions.
