ACR 60, Holden. San Diego State University Aztecs: March Madness.
This measure would honor and congratulate the San Diego State University Aztecs for advancing to the 2023 NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament national championship game.

WHEREAS, The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I men’s and women’s college basketball championship tournament, which begins in mid-March and concludes the beginning of April, is referred to as March Madness; and
WHEREAS, In the single-elimination tournament, 68 teams compete in seven rounds for the national championship; and
WHEREAS, In the 2022–23 season, the San Diego State University (SDSU) Aztecs men’s basketball team made history as the first California State University school to appear in the National Championship Game; and
WHEREAS, The Aztecs’ appearance in the regional final game, the Final Four, and the national title game is their first and the first for a Mountain West program, which began competition in the 1999–00 season; and
WHEREAS, The Aztecs, with a 32-7 overall record, captured the Mountain West (MW) Conference regular season title with a 15-3 record, then won all three Mountain West tournament games and earned a No. 5 seed in the South Regional for the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament; and
WHEREAS, The Aztecs defeated No. 12-seeded College of Charleston and No. 13-seeded Furman before defeating the overall No. 1-seeded Alabama in the Sweet 16 and No. 6-seeded Creighton to win the South Regional and make its first Final Four; and
WHEREAS, The Aztecs toppled the No. 9-seeded Florida Atlantic Owls 72 to 71 on a buzzer beater by Lamont Butler in the Final Four to advance to the championship game; and
WHEREAS, The Aztecs played the University of Connecticut (UConn), the West Regional champion, for the national championship on April 4, 2023, which UConn won 76 to 59; and
WHEREAS, Brian Dutcher has been the Aztecs’ head coach for six seasons in which he has led the team to six Mountain West title games, their conference-record 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th Mountain West crowns, and to the NCAA tournament four times; and
WHEREAS, Dutcher is the only coach in the 101-year history of SDSU men’s basketball to win at least 20 games in each of his first six seasons; and
WHEREAS, The Aztecs won 32 games this season, the second most in program history. Only the 2010–11 squad led by Kawhi Leonard had more victories, with 34; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature of the State of California hereby honors and congratulates the San Diego State University Aztecs for advancing to the 2023 NCAA men’s basketball tournament national championship game; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
