Payómkawish Highway.
This measure would designate a specified portion of State Highway Route 76 in the County of San Diego as the Payómkawish Highway. The measure would also request that the Department of Transportation determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs.

YES WHEREAS, For over 10,000 years, the Luiseño people have occupied the San Luis Rey valley; and
WHEREAS, The largest Luiseño village on record, known as Topomai, was just north of the City of Oceanside; and
WHEREAS, Today, this historic area is a part of the Camp Pendleton military base; and
WHEREAS, The original territory of the Luiseño people encompassed the northwestern section of the present-day County of San Diego, including sections of coastline, lagoons, creeks, rivers, oak forests, and meadows; and
WHEREAS, What is now State Highway Route 76 was once a pathway for the Luiseño people to migrate from the valley to the coastline with the changing of the seasons; and
WHEREAS, This land and route thus hold special historical and cultural significance to the Luiseño people; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the portion of State Highway Route 76 from Pauma Reservation Road, at postmile 28.990, to Rincon Rancho Road, at postmile R34.223, in the County of San Diego as the Payómkawish Highway; and be it further
Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system, showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
