AB-639 Pupil instruction: financial literacy.(2021-2022)



As Amends the Law Today


SECTION 1.

 Section 51225.9 is added to the Education Code, to read:

51225.9.
 (a) Commencing with the 2022–23 school year, a local educational agency may incorporate a financial literacy program into an economics course offered to satisfy the requirement of subparagraph (D) of paragraph (1) of subdivision (a) of Section 51225.3. The local educational agency may collaborate with a financial institution to establish the financial literacy program, at no cost to the local educational agency. In providing the financial literacy program, a local educational agency may use guest speakers or a presentation-type format.
(b) The curriculum for the financial literacy program authorized in subdivision (a) may include, but is not limited to, topics listed in paragraphs (1) to (11), inclusive, of subdivision (a) of Section 51284.5.
(c) For purposes of this section, the following definitions apply:
(1) “Financial institution” means any bank, savings bank, savings and loan association, or credit union established under the laws of the United States or of any state thereof.
(2) “Local educational agency” means a school district or charter school.
(d) This section does not supersede the requirements of Section 51225.3.
