AB-1177 Educational materials: labor history.(2003-2004)

As Amends the Law Today

Section 60043 of the Education Code is amended to read:

 When   In  adopting instructional materials for use in the schools, the governing board shall require, when appropriate to the comprehension of pupils, that textbooks for social science, history history,  or civics classes contain the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States.
(b) In adopting instructional materials for use in the schools, the governing board shall require that textbooks for social science, history, or civics classes contain material that relate to California labor history and trace the advances and retreats of organized labor, from the creation of the American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations to current issues of a postindustrial, multinational economy, including the United Farm Workers in California, to be used during Labor History Week and other appropriate occasions.
SEC. 2.
 Notwithstanding Section 17610 of the Government Code, if the Commission on State Mandates determines that this act contains costs mandated by the state, reimbursement to local agencies and school districts for those costs shall be made pursuant to Part 7 (commencing with Section 17500) of Division 4 of Title 2 of the Government Code. If the statewide cost of the claim for reimbursement does not exceed one million dollars ($1,000,000), reimbursement shall be made from the State Mandates Claims Fund.
