An act to amend Section 44015 of the Education Code, relating to school employees.

SB 585, as introduced, Mendoza. School employees: awards.
Existing law establishes a system of public elementary and secondary schools in this state and authorizes local educational agencies throughout the state to operate schools and provide instruction to pupils in kindergarten and grades 1 to 12, inclusive. Existing law authorizes the governing board of a school district to make awards to employees who do any of certain specified acts.
This bill would also authorize the governing board of a school district to make awards to employees who use their own personal resources to meet the classroom material needs of pupils.
The bill would also make nonsubstantive changes to these provisions.

The people of the State of California do enact as follows:


SECTION 1.

 Section 44015 of the Education Code is amended to read:

44015.
 (a) The governing board of a school district may make awards to employees who do any of the following:
(1) Propose procedures or ideas that thereafter are adopted and effectuated, and that result in eliminating or reducing school district expenditures or improving operations.
(2) Perform special acts or special services in the public interest.
(3) By their superior accomplishments, make exceptional contributions to the efficiency, economy, or other improvement in operations of the school district.
(4) Use their own personal resources to meet the classroom material needs of pupils.
(b) The governing board of a school district may make awards to pupils for excellence.

Before

(c) (1) Before any awards are made pursuant to this section, the governing board of a school district shall adopt rules and regulations. The governing board of a school district may appoint one or more merit award committees made up of school district officers, school district employees, or private citizens to consider employee proposals, special acts, special services, or superior accomplishments accomplishments, and to act affirmatively or negatively thereon thereon, or to provide appropriate recommendations thereon to the board. governing board of the school district.
