Relative to the 100th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement in Korea.


LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST


SR 23, Portantino.

WHEREAS, The Korean American community established its presence in the State of California over 100 years ago; and
WHEREAS, There are an estimated 425,000 Korean Americans currently residing in California; and
WHEREAS, On the first day of the third month in 1919, the people of Korea peacefully demonstrated for independence from Japanese rule. This independence movement was called “Man-Se”; and
WHEREAS, Korean Americans celebrate their peaceful independence “Man-Se” demonstrations nationwide on the first day of the third month each year; and
WHEREAS, About 300 Korean Americans from all over California, including those living in the Cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco, and in the Silicon Valley, came to the rural towns of Reedley and Dinuba on March 1, 1920, to celebrate their peaceful independence “Man-Se” movement; and
WHEREAS, The march in Dinuba on March 1, 1920, was the first event in the world to commemorate the Korean March 1 Independence Movement; and
WHEREAS, Korea and the United States have been working together for peace of both countries and the world, especially since October 1, 1953, under the Mutual Defense Treaty between the Republic of Korea and the United States; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, That the first day of March 2019, is hereby commemorated by the Senate as the 100th anniversary of the Korean March 1st Independence Movement Day; and be it further
Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the Consul General of the Republic of Korea in the Cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco, and to the author for appropriate distribution.
