An act to add Article 2.5 (commencing with Section 983) to Chapter 6 of Division 4 of the Military and Veterans Code, relating to veterans housing, and making an appropriation therefor.

Existing law creates the Veterans Housing and Homeless Prevention Act of 2014, to provide for the acquisition, construction, rehabilitation, and preservation of affordable multifamily supportive housing, affordable transitional housing, affordable rental housing, or related facilities for veterans and their families to allow veterans to access and maintain housing stability.
This bill would require the department to establish a rental housing assistance program to provide financial assistance to veterans seeking rental housing, based on the needs of the veterans. The bill would require the department to coordinate the program with existing state and federal veterans services and to provide detailed information about the program in a publication, as specified. The bill would additionally appropriate an unspecified sum to the department for the purposes of establishing this program.

The people of the State of California do enact as follows:


SECTION 1.

 Article 2.5 (commencing with Section 983) is added to Chapter 6 of Division 4 of the Military and Veterans Code, to read:
Article  2.5. Veterans Rental Housing Assistance

983.
 (a) The department shall establish a rental housing assistance program to provide financial assistance to veterans seeking rental housing, based on the needs of the veterans.
(b) When establishing a program pursuant to subdivision (a), the department shall coordinate the program with existing state and federal veterans services.
(c) The department shall provide detailed information about the program established pursuant to subdivision (a) in a publication on the department’s internet website.

SEC. 2.

 The sum of ___ dollars ($___) is hereby appropriated from the General Fund to the Department of Veterans Affairs for the purposes of establishing and funding a program pursuant to Article 2.5 (commencing with Section 983) of Chapter 6 of Division 4 of the Military and Veterans Code.
