Relative to Coastal Cleanup Day.

ACR 136, as introduced, Cunningham. Coastal Cleanup Day.
This measure would recognize the 3rd Saturday in September as Coastal Cleanup Day and proclaim September 21, 2019, as the 35th annual Coastal Cleanup Day in California.

WHEREAS, The State of California’s 1,100 mile coast, an unmistakable component of the state’s identity, provides unparalleled natural beauty and its shoreline and ocean are home to a diverse array of marine life; and
WHEREAS, Beyond its significant environmental value, the California coast also provides recreational opportunities and supports multiple coastal industries; and
WHEREAS, The responsible stewardship and preservation of the California coast’s aesthetic, environmental, and economic benefits is essential; and
WHEREAS, This responsibility falls upon individual Californians, the business community, and public institutions alike; and
WHEREAS, California should foster a climate to support enviropreneurship and encourage businesses to develop clean and affordable technology to help protect our coastal and marine ecosystems; and
WHEREAS, The California Coastal Commission has been the primary sponsor of Coastal Cleanup Day, the state’s largest volunteer event, since 1985; and
WHEREAS, Since the first Coastal Cleanup Day, almost 1.6 million individuals have volunteered to collect marine debris and beach litter and removed over 24 million pounds of debris from state beaches, lakes, and waterways; and
WHEREAS, At the 2018 Coastal Cleanup Day, volunteers removed over 800,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from California’s coast and inland waterways; and
WHEREAS, The 35th annual Coastal Cleanup Day will take place on September 21, 2019; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature recognizes the third Saturday in September as Coastal Cleanup Day and hereby proclaims September 21, 2019, as the 35th annual Coastal Cleanup Day in California; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
