Assembly Bill No. 1062
CHAPTER 70

An act to add Section 51230 to the Education Code, relating to pupil instruction.

[ Approved by Governor  July 10, 2019. Filed with Secretary of State  July 10, 2019. ]

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST

AB 1062, Limón. Pupil instruction: community emergency response training.
Existing law requires each pupil completing grade 12 to satisfy certain requirements as a condition of receiving a diploma of graduation from high school. These requirements include the completion of designated coursework in grades 9 to 12, inclusive. Existing law authorizes a governing board of a school district to adopt other coursework requirements.
This bill would authorize, if the governing board of a school district requires the completion of community service hours as a requirement for graduation from high school, a school district to provide a pupil with credit towards the required community service hours commensurate with the hours required for completion of a course in community emergency response training.
Vote: MAJORITY   Appropriation: NO   Fiscal Committee: NO   Local Program: NO

The people of the State of California do enact as follows:

SECTION 1.

Section 51230 is added to the Education Code, immediately following Section 51229, to read:

51230.
 (a) If the governing board of a school district requires the completion of community service hours as a requirement for graduation from high school, the school district may provide a pupil with credit towards the community service hours required for graduation commensurate with the hours required for completion of a course in community emergency response training.
(b) Subdivision (a) does not exempt the governing board of a school district from complying with the requirements of subdivision (b) of Section 51225.3.
